Design from Web 2.0 makes it into the newspaper world

As far as I know, the idea of using larger font sizes to describe larger groups comes from the Web 2.0 crowd, usually for things like a ‘tagcloud’.  It looks like the Vancouver Sun has used that idea for their front page article on property values in BC.  The larger the font, the larger the increase in property values.

If only my net worth followed this trend.  Our townhouse increased in value almost exactly in line with Port Moody’s reported 28.9% increase, but that was before we bought it. :(

Tomato harvest

Damn, this is an old draft that never got posted!  It was some time in late August but I don’t remember the exact date. :(
Yesterday I went back to the old house in Vancouver to check on my tomato and bean plants. Wow! The garden looked amazing. I had pruned the tops of the tomato plants, but secondary vines had continued to grow over the trellis and back down again. I’d estimate they were about 8 feet tall. They all looked great, and I picked about 30 delicious tomatoes. One of the plants was a yellow cherry called Dr. Carolyn. It’s yield was much smaller than the Anna Aasa or Cherry Brandywine, but I think that was because it was in the middle, and didn’t get as much sun or water. It’s too bad, because they were amazing, I could have eaten several pounds of those.
The beans had also done quite well. The kids upstairs weren’t as fond of eating them though, since they had grown too large to eat as snap beans. I decided to leave those to dry on the plant, but I did manage to pick about 40 nicely sized beans, which I ate last night. Wow! They were the most tender and delicious beans I have ever tasted, and I’m going to have to rethink my garden plans for next year to include more beans. I think I’ll try planting them in containers to keep on our patio.
There were a few surprises in the garden as well. The parsley that I had trimmed right to the ground had grown again, and was the radius of about a basketball, and about 1.5ft high. The basil plant had survived, and was doing well. There were even some rogue parsley plants that must have self seeded from last year because they were amongst the weeds. All of the carrots had been picked as well, and I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did with the kids around. :)
I’m going to come back again at the end of September to collect the beans that have matured, and in the middle of October to clean up the tomatoes. Hopefully I’ll find some nice toms hidden in the back that the kids haven’t been able to find. :)
