Went to the Lions game with Aaron, Am, and some other BC Hydro people. It was an amazing game, with the Lions scoring a touchdown with 0:00 on the clock.

After that, we went to Justin’s place for a Halloween party.

Went to see my friend’s dad’s band, Malpractice, at the Yale on Friday. $7.50 parking, $10 cover, now I remember why I hate going to clubs downtown.

Malpractice (no web page… bah) is an R&B cover band made up of doctors, nurses, and some freelance people. Good trumpet player.

I was surprised to hear them do ‘Take Me to the River’ since I always thought that it was originally done by the Talking Heads. Turns out the original is done by Al Green and Teenie Hodges, but I can’t find when it came out.

They also did ‘Hard To Handle’ by Otis Reading, which was very cool.

This may be useful when I try database programming.

An excellent summary of different types of programming personalities. You can learn a lot about a person’s coding style by how they deal with run-time errors.

Goto’s considered useful! Shocking.

The first try for a decent mythtv setup:

• Barebones system: Soltek QBic
• Capture card: Hauppauge PVR

Add some ram, DVD burner, hard drive and I’ll be set.

There is a great resource called EpiaWiki that has all the details on using Linux on an EPIA based system.

I’m also thinking that this Hauppauge stand-alone unit would be a great frontend with this firmware.

I’ve been bitten by the MythTv bug.

It’s a really cool idea that was inspired by Tivo, but it’s grown way beyond that. You put together a computer with a video-capture card, TV output, big hard drive, and give it a net connection. You let it know which shows you want to download, and it saves them to your hard drive. You can use it to watch and pause live tv as well.

It’s been getting lots of press lately.
